Ex-steel boss John Graham dies aged 81

A FORMER director of Scunthorpe steelworks, John Graham, has died at the age of 81 after losing his battle against cancer. Father-of-four Mr Graham was former supplies director for the Scunthorpe plant and at one time a major in the Territorial Army and the president of the Scunthorpe Rugby Union Club. Paying tribute, Paul Martin, the human resources director for British Steel, said: “We were all sad to hear that our former colleague John Graham has passed away.

“John dedicated many years to the steel industry and was hjghly respected and thought of. Our thoughts are with his family and friends”.

Mr Graham was born in York and served with the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment as a commissioned officer in B erlin. Later he served in the Territorial Army with companies in Grimsby and Gainsborough and gained the Territorial Decoration. At the age of 20, he took up a commercial apprenticeship with the former United Steel company.

Thirteen years later Mr Graham was appointed the supplies director for the Scunthorpe works.

During this time he started his long association with the Scunthorpe Rugby Club as a player and an official. Before he retired, Mr Graham was made manager of the supplies, shipping and transport division of the General Steels division. His widow Sue Graham, who hails from Burton-upon-Stather, said: “His most difficult time was during the miners’ strike when all the UK coal fields were closed and he had to source all materials worldwide.”

Eight years ago the Grahams moved from Winterton to Oundle to be nearer to their family.

Their four daughters all went to Winterton Comprehensive School and later John Leggott College in Scunthorpe.

The family have organised a private cremation but a celebration of Mr Graham’s life will be held on August 18 at noon in St Peter’s Church, Oundle.
