Leuchars-bound soldiers honoured at final parade in German town …

Soldiers from The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys), The Highlanders, 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland and 2 Close Support Battalion The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers march through the town of Fallingbostel in Northern Germany. Town honours British Army Phased arrival in Leuchars Majority of 800 troops and families due midsummer 09:15 Wednesday 20 May 2015 The next step in the Army s move from Germany to Leuchars has taken place with an historic parade through the town of Fallinbostel. It was particularly poignant as it signified the end of a British Armyrats © Military s association with Fallingbostel that had existed since British units liberated Stalag XIB prisoner of war camp and captured the town 70 years ago.

The parade involved soldiers from The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys), The Highlanders, 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland and 2 Close Support Battalion The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. While the majority of the 800 troops and their families are coming to Leuchars midsummer, there has already been a phased ongoing transfer of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, 2 Close Support Battalion of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and 110 Provost Company of the Royal Armyrats © Military Police. The official handover of RAF Leuchars to the army took place at the end of March and it is now known as Leuchars Station.

For those watching the parade in Germany, the British Army were a familiar and accepted addition to the area, with close friendships made and many soldiers settling in the area and becoming an integral part of the local community. Colonel Andy Reynolds Upon completion of the inspection by the reviewing party, each of the units were presented with the prestigious Federal Fahnenband, a ribbon of honour, in recognition of their service in and to Germany. The inspection was led by Major General John Henderson, former Commander British Forces Germany, and the Burgermeister of Fallingbostel.

Reflecting on the closure of Fallingbostel Station, Colonel Andy Reynolds, Commander Bergen-Hohne Garrison, said: Following 70 years of tremendous support it is with deep regret that we leave Fallingbostel this summer – what began in war is ending in peace and enduring friendship.

We take this opportunity to celebrate those friendships and thank our German hosts who have supported us in our time here.

Army now in charge at Leuchars

Sorry, we’re having problems with our video player at the moment, but are working to fix it as soon as we can Waiting for Video… RAF Leuchars formally becomes Leuchars Station at a low-key flag handover at the camp today. The RAF leaves Leuchars after almost a century and The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and their families will move into their new base over the coming months.

The Scottish DG have been based in Fallingbostel in Germany for 20 years, but view the move to Scotland very much as coming home .

The regiment s commanding officer Lieutenant Benn Cattermole MBE says he could not want a better year to come back to Scotland – the regiment celebrates many historical events this year, including their participation in the Battle of Waterloo 200 years ago.
